On the occasion, the Prime Minister virtually inaugurated several key projects, including the Helen Lepcha Medical College, a mini secretariat, the eco-tourism pilgrimage complex at Dodak, and the administrative block of the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Centre of Excellence. Foundation stones were also laid for a 100-bed Ayurveda hospital, the eco-pilgrimage complex at Silnon, a public utility centre, and a major sewage system overhaul.
Officials said these initiatives mark a significant step in strengthening Sikkim’s infrastructure, healthcare network, and sustainability framework, paving the way for a more resilient and prosperous future.
Earlier, Prime Minister Modi visited the Swarna Jayanti Maitreya Manjari at Ridge Park in Gangtok, highlighting Sikkim’s model of environmentally sustainable development. He was accompanied by Governor Mathur and Chief Minister Tamang.
The landmark project, part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations, features a 26-foot copper-structured monument symbolising five decades of Sikkim’s integration and progress. Situated near White Hall, the complex seamlessly blends cultural symbolism with ecological consciousness.
A key attraction is the Orchidarium ~ a climate-controlled, two-level facility housing over 100 orchid species. Around 70 per cent are live specimens, complemented by detailed botanical models. Indigenous varieties such as Dendrobium nobile are showcased alongside unique specimens like Cymbidium NaMo, including a rare orchid named in honour of the Prime Minister.
During his visit, Modi toured the Orchidarium, interacting with officials and reviewing conservation practices aimed at preserving the fragile ecosystem.
Officials noted that the project reflects Sikkim’s five-decade journey of balancing development with environmental responsibility and is expected to further strengthen its position as a leading ecotourism destination.
The Prime Minister later proceeded to Paljor Stadium to attend the grand closing ceremony of the Golden Jubilee celebrations.
